BYOD policies with Frank Scavo
- Summary:
- Bring Your Own Device has moved much more quickly than we imagined. Now is the time to be thinking about BYOD policies says Frank Scavo.
Frank Scavo, CEO Computer Economics sat down with Den this week to discuss the findings of a US and Canadian survey of best practices in IT. From the blurbs:
We doubled the scope of the study this year to examine the growth and maturity of 24 IT management practices. To simplify the presentation, we have grouped the practices into four major categories: IT governance practices, IT financial management practices, IT operational management practices, and IT security practices. While the boundaries between these best-practice categories are far from fixed, the categories provide an opportunity to discuss the selected practices within the context of related practices. We present our key study findings by category at the beginning of each section.
In the video above, we concentrated on Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) best practices. Frank says:
- 12% fully practicing BYOD policies
- 25% partially practicing (applies to some workers not all)
- 18% don't have policies but are in the process of implementation
- 32% considering BYOD
- 13% not doing anything in this area
The lesson I picked up from this conversation is that BYOD is moving very quickly and if Frank's numbers can be extrapolated to the whole population, then it's not an optional deployment model, it's happened. That also gives you a flavor of how fast mobile has become a reality inside business given we've only been discussing BYOD for the last couple of years.
However and as Frank points out, it is an emergent area and one where companies will need to move quickly to ensure they are compliant with local legislation across many dimensions.
